Proposal

The type of music that I have chosen to is Korean Pop. This main target audience are young teenagers and adults aged around 16-23. I have chosen Korean Pop as young teenagers in this modern age are listening to a lot of Korean music and also are attracted to some of the artists. It is needed as some hidden artists or popular artists in Korea are not in other popular magazines worldwide.

Title Block - Q

• “Q” is one of the best selling music magazines in the UK and the world’s best music guide.
• The target audience is 25-45 and advertises a wide range of music.
• Originally it was called “Cue”but it was changed so it wasn’t mistekn for a snooker magazine.
• Another reason, the single letter title would be more prominent on news stand.
• The magazine is published beginning of every month.

Title Block - Vibe

• It is an r’n’b magazine.
• “Vibe” has used a variety of colours for their title. This could be because it goes with the seasons or it depends on who is on the front cover.
• The use of red is quite bold which attracts the audience. It can interpret that that the colour red is a warning as there may be the latest gossip with the celebrities.
• Target audience are targeted to a young audience between 15-24.
• The word has 3 capital letters and a lower case. This shows that the magazine appeals to a younger audience.

Title Block - NME

• The use of the colour red is quite bold and also shows that it is dangerous and as it is in capitals this gives a wider attention to the audience.
• The letters “NME” is in short form for “New Musical Express”. They have used short form as it is catchy for the audience to remember.
• The black background gives the boldness of the title and this also allows the audience to remember the title as it is catchy.
• The outline of the letters (the colour white) show that the title is in 3D and the use of the shadows also show this.
• It is quite a rebellious magazine. It used to be a prestigious magazine but now it’s a gossip magazine.

Title Block - Kerrang

• The magazine title “Kerrang!” emphasises that the word itself is a sound of a guitar and this shows that the magazine is a rock magazine.
• The use of the capital letters also emphasise that the sound is loud and the use of punctuation of the exclamation mark also shows this.
• The colour black shows that the target audience is aimed at people who have an interest in rock music and could possibly be aimed at emos and Goths.
• The use of cracks also shows that the magazine is “out of control”. This could also interpret that as there is an exclamation mark, this can show how loud the music was.
• Target audience young teenagers/young adults.

Analysis of Front cover - NME

The title of the magazine is NME, short for “New Musical Express” which is shown just below the title. The use of the short notation of the magazine attracts the audience to remember the name of it and the colours used are very bold and strong. The colour red makes the magazine dangerous and the capital letters gives the wider attention towards the audience. This is a music magazine and only specialises in one type of genre of music which is rock as the use of words “rock” and the artist used on the front cover illustrates this. The audience that it is targeted to are young teenagers, punks and people that have an interest or enjoy rock music.
As you look on the front cover, the top bar also known as the special selling line, illustrates what the magazine will contain. This immediately gives a chance to the audience whether they should buy the magazine before reading it. This benefits the magazine as this immediately attracts the audience to buy the magazine. As the lettering is in bold capital letters, this attracts the audience 1st. They have “Gorillaz” in red showing that this is the artist that is going to keep the audience interested and also this grabs the reader’s attention. The main colours that the magazine has used for this cover issue are mainly black, white and red. This signatures the magazine and allows the audience to immediately tell the difference between other magazines.
The image used on this magazine is a member of the band, My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way. They have used this image to enlighten the audience that the band is coming back for their new album release. They have used a full body shot to show the audience his whole body features. This could also interpret the changes of the artist from many years. He is tilting slightly and his face is looking directly towards the reader. This can emphasise the reader to buy the magazine. The colours of his clothing are black and white with a blue tie which interprets that he is a rock star. This stereotype how rock people dress; which is black and white.
The puff words on the side of the magazine shows the main story headlines or gossip that will appear in the magazine. They have used only two colours which are red and white. The first set of words has a background of red showing the little comments and below shows the information and the mini jokes towards the actual article.
The buzz word, on the bottom of the magazine, “Plus” informs the audience that there are other artists that are also involved in the magazine such as Kid Cudi, Maccabees and etc. This is a promoting technique to lure the audience to buy the magazine.
The anchorage text on the left side of the magazine informs the audience that the main participation of the magazine is the band My Chemical Romance. It also has a pattern of the colours white and red. This is an overall theme for the cover issue allowing it to be dangerous and exciting for the audience to look at. The first sentence is in bold capital white letters which appeals to the eye of the audience. The use of the punctuation, exclamation mark and the inverted commas, instantly shows the audience that the comeback of the band is not going to be rock opera; it’s going to be something new and different. It also interprets that the magazine is shouting at the reader’s attention.

Analysis of Q Magazine - Cheryl Cole

The title of the magazine is “Q”. This is a music magazine and doesn’t feature just one genre of music but everything. This is aimed at for music lovers who would like to know the first releases before everyone else. From looking at the cover, the target audience is a young audience such as teenagers and young adults in their mid 20’s. This is because the layout of the magazine and the colours used show the contrast of the centre image.
The title itself is short and appealing to the audience. The letter “Q” is in white with a red background and this initialises the signature of the magazine.
As you look on the front cover, the top bar of the magazine tells the audience that this has been voted for being the biggest music magazine. This benefits the magazine as this could help promote the magazine and attract more magazine readers/customers.
The image of the front cover that they have used is Cheryl Cole. The type of shot that they have used is a close up shot. This allows the audience to see her facial expression and her inner beauty. This would appeal to the audience as she had released her album and have also appeared on X Factor. Her facial expression shows that she has an evil side to herself; a demon. This is because of the use of the strong pure red and black. This can also show that the edition of the magazine is a rock theme. The use of makeup gives an idea to the audience that the theme of the magazine is rock. The eye shadow that they have used is a smoky black showing that she has a dark side other than having her innocent side. The strong red lipstick interprets that she also has a devilish sexy side towards her personality. In the background of the actual image shows the rain droplets, showing that the shoot was set in the rain. The use of the wet hair makes the audience to be attracted to Cheryl Cole. This makes the magazine have a different outcome by making it look sexier. The makeup that they have used is pale making her key facial features outstand such as her eyes and lips. With her tongue licking her ring will immediately attract the audience as some of the target audience may think this may have a sex appeal.
The anchorage text informs the audience that the magazine is based on Cheryl Cole. The use of the 3 different types of fonts and also the size show the tension of introducing her towards the magazine. It also shows that as she has a big fame in the music industry this shows that she is different from other celebrities. The first sentence has the use of ellipsis showing the tension of introducing the image (celebrity) to the audience. The font used is similar to the font used in her album front cover. This shows that the magazine is promoting her current album release. The three colours that are used signatures the magazine as this occurs to most of Q magazine covers.
The puff words on the magazine, “The 10 Best New Acts” (on the top right corner) shows to the audience that the money that they are paying for this magazine will thrill the audience with a variety of images and articles of main celebs. This allows the audience to have an opportunity of latest gossip and possibly latest fashion styles. Also, on the middle left, there is also a use of puff words. This also illustrates an idea of what information the magazine is containing as the list says “Muse”, “Snow Patrol”, “Midlake” and etc.
